When painting leaves the thing behind
At some point the painting no longer needs a tree. Kandinsky hears color as sound; Klee takes a line for a walk; a century of rooms in this Hub become possible.
Abstraction is not one style. It is a permission: that marks, colors, and relations can be as real as a face.
Der Blaue Reiter in Munich is one birthplace. Others are in Moscow (see Suprematism), Paris, and later New York.
