De Stijl
Horizontal, vertical, three colors

De Stijl reduces the world to the horizontal, the vertical, and three primaries plus black, white, and gray. Mondrian calls his mature work Neoplasticism.
It is an ethic of balance. After the First World War, harmony is not a soft word — it is a reconstruction plan.
Theo van Doesburg spreads the gospel (and later slants the line, which Mondrian cannot forgive).
