Symbolism

The inner world before Surrealism

Symbolism is the dream that arrives before Surrealism has a name for it. Painters and poets turn away from the boulevard and toward myth, sickness, desire, and the inner weather of the soul.

Where Impressionism trusts the eye, Symbolism trusts the emblem. A swan, a sphinx, a gold pattern, a closed eyelid — these are not subjects so much as passwords.

This room was listed on the original Hub homepage and left empty. It belongs between Post-impressionism and the later dream-work of Surrealism.
